US-Truppen nach Israel?

Verschiedene Meldungen berichten, dass mehrere tausend US-Soldaten nach Israel verlegt werden sollen, während gleichzeitig israelisches Militärpersonal nach Deutschland zum EUCOM kommen soll:

In one of the most blacked-out stories in America right now, the US military is preparing to send thousands of US troops, along with US Naval anti-missile ships and accompanying support personnel, to Israel. It took forever to find a second source for confirmation of this story and both relatively mainstream media outlets are in Israel. With one source saying the military deployment and corresponding exercises are to occur in January, the source providing most of the details suggests it will occur later this spring.

Calling it not just an “exercise”, but a “deployment”, the Jerusalem Post quotes US Lt.-Gen Frank Gorenc, Commander of the US Third Air Force based in Germany. The US Commander visited Israel two weeks ago to confirm details for “the deployment of several thousand American soldiers to Israel.” In an effort to respond to recent Iranian threats and counter-threats, Israel announced the largest ever missile defense exercise in its history. Now, it’s reported that the US military, including the US Navy, will be stationed throughout Israel, also taking part.

Also confirming the upcoming US-Israeli military missile exercises is JTA.org – ‚global news service of the Jewish people‘. In their account, they report, ‚Last week, plans for Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, to visit Israel in January were leaked to Israeli media; his visit likely will coincide with the largest-ever joint U.S.-Israel anti-missile exercise‘.

While American troops will be stationed in Israel for an unspecified amount of time, Israeli military personnel will be added to EUCOM in Germany. EUCOM stands for United States European Command.

Das sieht mehr und mehr nach Kriegsvorbereitungen gegen den Iran aus.

Wie sich aus dem verlinkten Artikel und den Kommentaren (die sind teilweise ausgesprochen lesenswert) ergibt, wird diese Aktion äußerst leise gehandhabt. Dass die JP darüber berichtet, ist erstaunlich, in der amerikanischen Presse soll es nichts geben, in der deutschen ohnehin nicht.

Die zensierte Kunst der Kinder Gazas

Kinder aus Gaza, die den Überfall Israels 2008/2009 erlebt hatten, malten Bilder. Diese sollten im September im Museum of Children’s Art in Oakland (MOCHA), ausgestellt werden – doch die Ausstellung kam auf israelischen Druck nicht zustande.

Die Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA), die die Bilder ersatzweise an anderer Stelle ausstellte,  hat nun die Bilder in Buchform produziert und das Buch kann man erwerben.

Book of censored Gaza children’s artwork published

Artwork made by children in Gaza who lived through Israel’s attacks in the winter of 2008-09 and exhibited by the Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA) in the Bay Area is now available in book form in order to reach a wider audience.

The collection of original artwork was scheduled to be exhibited in September by the Museum of Children’s Art in Oakland (MOCHA), but due to intimidation and pressure from Israeli lobby groups, the museum canceled the exhibit at the last minute.

MECA immediately sprung into action and arranged for the artwork to be shown at a vacant gallery space around the corner from the children’s museum. Days before the doors opened, MOCHA’s board told MECA’s executive director Barbara Lubin that they could reinstate the exhibit at the original museum space, but that the collection would have to be “modified.”

Lubin and MECA responded:

We at MECA made a commitment to the children of Gaza to share their experiences and perspectives, and consider any modifications to the art exhibit as a form of censorship. Children everywhere deserve to be heard, but we have an even greater responsibility to listen to the stories of children under siege and who survived Israel’s brutal military assault in 2008-2009.

In a press release for the book’s publication, MECA states that the drawings featured in A Child’s View from Gaza: Palestinian Children’s Art and the Fight Against Censorship ”serve as part of the historical record of the horror inflicted on the Palestinian people during Operation Cast Lead as experienced by children. Photos of the aftermath and the recent efforts by pro-Israel groups to censor the children’s art are also highlighted in the book.”

They added:

With beautiful, high-resolution print images of the exhibit, the book also features a special foreword by celebrated author, Alice Walker, as well as an essay by MECA Executive Director, Barbara Lubin, describing the struggle against the censorship.

As we approach the three-year anniversary of Israel’s brutal assault on the Gaza Strip, in which over 1400 civilians were killed including 352 children, the need to support the ones who survived to tell their stories and the trauma they experienced through art is now more crucial than ever.

Obamas fragwürdiger Umgang

Ich kann von mir sagen, dass ich mich bei der Obamania außen vor gehalten habe – eigentlich, weil ich fürchtete, dass er als relativer Neuling vom Establishment einfach an die Wand gedrückt werden würde.

Ich hatte nicht mit vielen Dingen gerechnet, die er nun so tut. Auch und schon gar nicht, dass er sich von einem solchen Mann hochjubeln lässt:

Yoffie is a major Obama campaign surrogate, whose endorsement is featured on a pro-Obama website createdby the liberal Zionist Israel lobbying group, J Street.

While Yoffie proclaimed during his introduction of the President, “Our movement stands for openness and embraces pluralism,“ he has gone on the record in support of ethnic separation.

Earlier this year, Yoffie published the transcript of an argument he had with a right-wing friend who helped him lobby against the Palestinian Authority’s bid for statehood at the UN. He entitled the piece, „I prefer to live with Jews.“

Yoffie’s argument went as follows:

[Yoffie]: I care about humankind, but I love my own group a bit more. I am more comfortable with them. I care more about them, just as I care more about my family than other families. Without a two-state solution, Israel will not longer be a state for my group; it will be a bi-national state without a clear Jewish identity. That is not the kind of place where I, or most Israeli Jews, will want to live.

[Right-wing friend]: Are you saying you don’t want too many Arabs in the Jewish state?

[Yoffie]: Yes, that’s exactly what I am saying.

Amidst a wave of mosque burnings and racist, anti-democratic laws aimed at driving Palestinian citizens of Israel out of the country, a key Obama surrogate — a self-proclaimed liberal, no less — has declared explicit support for planning and maintaining Israel’s ethnic majority at the expense of its indigenous minority population — something Israeli leaders call „Judaization.“ „I don’t apologize for my views because I don’t apologize for Zionism,“ Yoffie stated.

Die muslimische Welt hatte teilweise große Hoffnungen in ihn gesetzt. Statt dessen kann Israel machen, was es will – DIESER Präsident wird keinen Palästinenser schützen.

Davon lässt sie sich auch nicht abhalten. Weder durch Warnungen der US-Regierung, noch durch die martialischen Drohungen der Israelischen Marine. Wobei die US-Regierung nicht etwa Israel warnt, nicht wieder Amerikaner umzubringen, sondern möchte, dass die nicht an der Flotilla teilnehmen. Schwaches Bild.

Apardheit – und der Kongress applaudiert

Über Netanyahus gestrige Rede vor dem amerikanischen Kongress wäre vieles zu sagen, vieles wird auch gesagt. Selbst der Spiegel hat kritische Anmerkungen.

Ich will mir aber einen Punkt herausgreifen, da dieser gerne missverstanden wird: Netanyahu verlangt, die Palästinenser, insbesondere die Hamas, müssten Israel als jüdischen Staat anerkennen. Das wird von palästinensischer Seite abgelehnt. Daraus machen dann viele, die Palästinenser bestritten das Existenzrecht Israels. Netanyahu punktet, und kaum jemand hört richtig hin.

Ein „jüdischer Staat“ – was soll das sein? Netanyahus Regierung, insbesondere Liebermann, machen das immer deutlicher: ein Mehrklassenstaat. Wirkliche Staatsbürger sind nur Juden – und wer Jude ist, bestimmt die Regierung. Dann gibt es Leute, die meinen, dass sie Juden sind – nicht orthodox Konvertierte, z.B., oder Leute, die die Papiere ihrer Großmütter nicht mehr finden, und die haben schon Probleme. Danach kommen andere – Araber, Gastarbeiter etc. Die für diese geltenden Gesetze werden seit der letzten Wahl immer übler. Nicht nur in den besetzten Gebieten, sondern gerade auch im Land werden Araber schikaniert, ihre Dörfer zerstört, ihre Wohngebiete infrastrukturell benachteiligt. Es entsteht ein Apardheidssystem. Und das soll anerkannt werden, als Voraussetzung für Friedensverhandlungen? Jeder palästinensische Politiker, der das täte, müsste zu Recht ein Verräter genannt werden. Jeder ausländische Politiker, der die Palästinenser dazu zwingen will, ist entweder ein Idiot oder ein Feind.

Denn – es gibt u.a. ein ganz wesentliches Gesetz, das auch nur – anerkannten – Juden Rechte gibt: das Rückkehrgesetz. Es besagt, dass jeder Jude berechtigt ist, nach Israel „zurückzukehren“ – selbst wenn seine Vorfahren dort nie gelebt haben. Er kann einfach so die Einreise beantragen, innerhalb kurzer Zeit die Staatsbürgerschaft. Weil er Jude ist.

Palästinenser aber, die selbst, deren Eltern, Großeltern und alle Vorfahren im Land geboren wurden, dann aber flohen, sei es 1947, 1948, 1967 oder wann auch immer, haben kein Recht, wieder in ihre Heimat zurückzukehren. Es gibt dazu zwar eine UN-Resolution, aber die interessiert Israel nicht.

Wenn z.B. ein Palästinenser, egal, ob Muslim oder Christ, heiratet, und der Ehegatte hat keinen israelischen Pass, können sie fast nie mehr in Israel zusammenleben – manchmal auch gar nicht.

Geht ein jüdischer Israeli für Jahre ins Ausland, kann er jederzeit zurückkehren. Geht ein nichtjüdischer Israeli – oder selbst ein Bewohner der besetzten Gebiete – auch nur vorübergehend außer Landes, riskiert er, nicht zurückkommen zu können.

Und die Welt schaut zu, der amerikanische Kongress gibt Netanyahu stehende Ovationen.

Zwei Staaten für zwei Völker?

Über diesen Satz soll es bei den Verhandlungen Streit gegeben haben. Dabei hört es sich ja erst mal recht vernünftig nach Zwei-Staaten-Lösung an. Jedoch, nach etlichen Bemerkungen Liebermanns bin wohl nicht nur ich hellhörig geworden. Zusammen mit der offenen Forderung Netanyahus, Israel als „jüdischen Staat“ anzuerkennen, lässt diese Aussage auch andere Schlüsse zu, als ledigliche eine gegenseitige Anerkennung der Staaten.

Liebermann – vielleicht hat er sich auch eher verplappert – ließ duchblicken, dass es ihm recht sei, je weniger Nichtjuden er in Israel ertragen muss. Dazu passt auch die gesamte Politik der Regierung, bis hin zur Ausweisung von Kinder von Gastarbeitern. Einen Treueeid auf einen jüdischen Staat will er fordern, wer ihn nicht leistet, soll verschwinden.

Und wo sollen die hin, die man dort nicht mehr will? Eine Frage, die sich auch stellt, wenn man berücksichtigt, dass ja Israel ebenfalls den Verzicht auf das Recht zur Rückkehr verlangt. Es heißt, die USA hätten angeboten, ca. 100 000 Palästinenser dort anzusiedeln. Gerüchte aber besagen, dass in anderen Ländern bereits Wohnsiedlungen im Bau sind, um Palästinenser aufzunehmen. Angeblich aus den Lagern des Libanon – nur ist das völlig unlogisch. Zusammen mit diesen israelischen Ideen jedoch lässt das ganz andere Vermutungen zu.

Heute, am 26. September 2010, endet der angebliche Baustopp im Westjordanland. Er war Voraussetzung dafür, dass die arabischen Länder und Abbas sich überhaupt wieder auf Verhandlungen einließen – dabei großzügig übersehend, dass während des „Stopps“ mehr gebaut wurde als zuvor.

Abbas sagte zuletzt, er werde nicht weiterverhandeln, würde der Baustopp nicht verlängert. Ich befürchte, er wird sich doch nötigen lassen, sich wieder an den Tisch zu setzen. Wird er irgendwann das Rückgrad haben, nein zu sagen? Kein Verzicht auf das gestohlene Land, kein Verzicht auf eine Rückkehroption, keine Bantustans, keine Entmilitarisierung, sondern wenn, dann ein Staat mit allem, was dazu gehört. Kann er das?

Die Skepsis darüber, was sich die USA und Israel als Ergebnis dieser Verhandlungen vorstellen, wächst schnell. Leider auch bei mir die Frage, was die arabischen, die muslimischen Länder für Palästina zu tun bereit sein werden, sollte es mit dem amerikanischen Druck so weitergehen.

Selbst ein Artikel in der USA Today wird da schon sarkastisch:

Although not yet an officially declared policy of the United States, its contours emerge from hints emanating from Clinton during the most recent round of negotiations. On her way to Egypt on Sept. 13, Clinton said, „We recognize that an agreement that could be forged between the Israelis and the Palestinians on actions that would be taken by both sides that would enable the negotiations to continue is in the best interests of both sides. This has to be understood as an effort by both the prime minister and the president to get over a hurdle posed by the expiration of the original moratorium in order to continue negotiations that hold out the promise of resolving all the core issues.“ And how would she propose the parties jump this hurdle? „I think there’s a lot of ways to get to the goal. Remember, the goal is to work toward agreement on core issues like borders and territories that would, if agreed upon, eliminate the debate about settlements, because some areas would be inside Israel and some areas would not be inside Israel. So I think that there are obligations on both sides to ensure that these negotiations continue.“

 In other words, the difference can be bridged by arm twisting the Palestinians to agree up front on the land that Israel will annex, permitting unfettered colonization, in exchange for the privilege of continuing negotiations in the ever-dimming hope that some crumbs will eventually get tossed their way in the undetermined future. Call this policy „Annexation First, Mini-Statehood Maybe Later.“

 Endorsing illegal actions

 Not only is this policy grossly unfair to the Palestinians, who have watched as Israel has relentlessly colonized the West Bank and East Jerusalem for the past 43 years, it also contradicts more than 30 years of official U.S. policy and attempts to put a stamp of approval on Israel’s patently illegal behavior.

Der vergessene Amerikaner

Unter den auf der Mavi Marmara ermordeten war ein junger Mann namens Furkan Dogan. In Amerika geboren, amerikanischer Staatsbürger, Medizinstudent in Kayseri, Türkei, wo sein Vater, ein Professor, lehrt. Nach dem 31.5. wurde meist von 9 getöteten Türken geschrieben – nicht falsch, denn er hatte durch seine Eltern auch die türkische Staatsangehörigkeit.

In den USA war sein Tod kein Thema. Wenn sonst wegen getöteter Amerikaner dort regelmäßig große Empörung herrscht, gab es hier nur lautes Schweigen. So laut, dass selbst der nicht sonderlich palästinafreundliche Kommentator der NYT, Roger Cohen, über den Toten einen Kommentar schrieb und dies thematisierte:

I have little doubt that if the American killed on those ships had been Hedy Epstein, a St. Louis-based Holocaust survivor, or Edward Peck, a former U.S. ambassador to Mauritania, we would have heard a lot more. We would have read the kind of tick-tock reconstructions that the deaths of Americans abroad in violent and disputed circumstances tend to provoke. (Epstein had planned to be aboard the flotilla and Peck was.)

I also have little doubt that if the incident had been different — say a 19-year-old American student called Michael Sandler killed by a Palestinian gunman in the West Bank when caught in a cross-fire between Palestinians and Israelis — we would have been deluged in stories about him.

But a chill descends when you have the combination of Israeli commandos doing the firing, an American with a foreign-sounding Muslim name, and the frenzied pre-emptive arguments of Israel and those among its U.S. supporters who will brook no criticism of the Jewish state.

I called the State Department, where an official said the U.S. ambassador in Turkey has offered the Dogan family assistance. (He also denied reports that the United States plans to designate I.H.H. a terrorist organization.)

Any further action, including a possible F.B.I. investigation of Dogan’s death, will hinge on the results of the inquiry being led by a retired Israeli Supreme Court justice and including two foreign observers. The Dogan family could also request F.B.I. action.

But it seems they have few illusions. Professor Dogan, who teaches at Kayseri University, told the Wall Street Journal’s Marc Champion (who wrote the best piece on Dogan) that he’s been wondering what the U.S. response would have been if his son had been a Christian living stateside. Having lived in America, he said, “I know what people do there when a cat gets stuck in a tree.”

It’s different, however, when an American Muslim male gets stuck in a hail of Israeli gunfire.

Es ehrt Cohen, diese beschämende Tatsache öffentlich zu machen. Es scheint in den USA nicht anders zu sein als in Europa: Muslime sind second class citizens.
